The Future…

Well the postings have been infrequent, and I apologise. There hasnt been anything to report! However, I’ve thought about the recently completed room and what I can do to improve things further, so here is what the future holds:-

  • Sell my Yamaha RX-V3800 and purchase a Yamaha RX-Z7 receiver. DONE!
  • Create masking panels to match my screen frame in order to improve contrast perception when watching 2.35:1 material (or wider). DONE!
  • Possibly buy a 2.35:1 screen and use the zoom mode on my Sony PJ for scope (yes I know it has a scope mode and that I had an anamorphic lens but at this time I cant afford to go back down that path).
  • Compare different grades of HDMI cables (always wanted to do this but was just lazy – this will happen in the next few days and I’ll report back with pics).

My solution to the screen masking is to buy some 10mm foam of some description from Clarke Rubber, cover it with black felt/velour and cut to size exactly slotting into the top and bottom of the screen. The VW60 produces excellent blacks, but these masks will absorb the stray light that highlights the letterbox nature of wider-than-1.78:1 ratio, and will make for a more visceral image on-screen. Over the weekend I plan to see how the zoom method looks in the room. If a success, I’ll buy a scope screen which will future-proof me for the day when quality anamorphic lenses become truly affordable!
