Mark,
just found your blogg, excellent work.
I am in the processs of building a new house with a dedicated HT room and was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions
1. did you looked at or install any acoustic suppression ie sound check board, double skin, green glue etc. to stop noise transfer to adjoining rooms
2. how much improvement did the acoustic panels make to the sound in the room
3. what cables did you run to the projector Component and HDMI? if so what lenght HDMI. I’m currently looking at a 10m run what is proving problematic to decide which one to purchase
4. I see on DTV that you organised a group buy for a DVDO edge, I know I missed that on but any plans for another one in the future and if so what sort of price?
thanks
Michael
G’day Michael, and thank you for the kind comments. With regard to your questions:-
1. I didnt use any acoustic treatments in the room or the structure in general (with the exception of the DIY panels I made) as there is only two of us at home, and like most WA homes the internal walls are brick rather than stud walls, so there is quite a decent level of suppression in effect. Factor in ceiling insulation above the PJ, and a seal around the door frame (and thick carpet) and its surprisingly good at keeping the noise in! Oh, and I didnt have any money left either!
2. Prior to building the panels I used one of my available programs to locate first reflection points in the room. The left hand side would be taken care of with the thick curtain, while the right hand side would involve panels. Its hard to say exactly as I really waited until the room was completed before doing a ‘before’ and ‘after’ comparison, but prior to mounting them I did a comparison with and without, and the difference was there, not huge, but then as said the carpet (and uderlay) had been significantly improved over the last iteration of the room. I’m happy I made them and would certainly recommend them for the few dollars it cost. And if I may so, they add a bit of character to the room.
3. With regards to HDMI cables, I may be biased as I sell them but I use both Kordz (Australia) for the long run (7m) and Chord Co. (UK) for the shorter runs. I use them because they are solid, are certified and guaranteed to work. I used to have component in the roof but took it out during the renovation as I now had no need for it.
4. The DVDO Edge price was very good if I may so, but incredibly close to cost price (very little margin on video products). However, I’m sure I could help you out if you were looking for one in the not-too-distant future!
Hope this helps.
mark,
thanks for the reply. I should have remembered about the solid brick walls having lived in WA for 7 years. Trust me it would make life a bit easier if I could do that ratehr than play around with boards and insulation.
In relation to the edge I have been able to purchase the unit that Spary adverised on DTV, but thankyou for the offer.
Couple of last question
rear seakers – based on your esperience would you recommend 7.1 with rears right behind you or would 5.1 with the rears to the side be better
cabling again – what cable did you use for the rear speakers
Hi Michael,
with regard to rears, I have the best of both worlds as I employ a 7.1 system now. It very much depends on the room, but I have generally always favoured rears behind when doing 5.1. I used Kordz INSTALL cable for the rears, which is a bright yellow-jacketed cable thats flame retardant, and inexpensive, but works very well.
