About

Welcome to my dedicated blog. My name is Mark and I’m a self-confessed tech addict, with a particularly huge passion for Audio/Visual. I am a qualified electronics engineer, and work in the A/V industry (in a retail capacity – it’s more fun selling it than making it!). I am always striving for perfection, relative to budget mind you, and it is this hope and aim that helped me decide to create a blog to follow my tech evolution over the next few years. I am about to undertake a Theatre Room renovation at home, which will be the ultimate test of whether this blog is a good idea or not. I will document and photograph as much as I can and by all means ask questions or provide feedback – it will all be appreciated.

Mark,
just found your blogg, excellent work.
I am in the processs of building a new house with a dedicated HT room and was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions
1. Was wondering if you looked at or install any acoustic suppression ie sound check board, double skin, green glue etc. to stop noise transfer to adjoining rooms
2. how much improvement did the acoustic panels make to the sound in the room
3. what cables did you run to the projector Component and HDMI? if so what lenght HDMI. I’m currently looking at a 10m run what is proving problematic to decide which one to purchase
4. I see on DTV that you organised a group buy for a DVDO edge, I know I missed that on but any plans for another one in the future and if so what sort of price?

thanks

Michael

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your response back in early Jan. Have you had a chance to compare audio quality of the 3800 and Z7?

Neale

Hi Neale,
Yes I have. My first comparison was between the 3800 and 3900, and I was expecting no difference in sound quality (as I had found no difference 12 months ago between the 2700 and 3800) but surprisingly the 3900 had a more open, effortless sound. I then did a comparison between the 3900 and Z7 when it finally became available and the difference was very subtle, but still an improvement over the 3900. I can’t say for sure that the Z7 is $1200 better than the Z7, as other features would need to be taken into consideration to make this decision, but in sheer sonic terms the 3900 would be the better buy. And when you consider that as of 1 March, the 3900 will retail for $2,999 and the Z7 for $4,499, this maybe an easier decision for some!
Hope this helps.

Just bought a v3900, not being a audiophile having trouble getting all components to work and the speaker set up. Do you do house calls, I am in Perth.

HI Garry,
Apologies for the delay in replying, and you probably have somebody already but my recommendation here in PERTH would be Graham Mills/GM Electronics (0418949469).

hey mark! great blog! need ur advice…

i saw ur post on dtvforum. i recently ordered an onkyo 1008 amp from hivizone and looks like it is faulty! i was chared $300 as import duty!

i am now about to send the amp back for my replacement. should i tell hivizone people to tagge the parcel has “warranty” so that i dont have to pay the imports again or should i tell them to discole the cost the amp below $1000??

any adv from your side is appreciated.

cheers,
yash

Hey yash,
I would re-iterate to them to tag the box on the way back as ‘repair under warranty’. In fact they may have told me to tag my box on the trip back to them too. Its been a while but I would contact hivizone first, Im sure this happens enough that they have a protocol or know exactly what to do with regard to customs.
Good luck!

Hi Mark,

I live in UK. Came across some of you posts on avforum.com. I am planning to buy a pair of REL T3′s to go along with M-Audio AV40 (small speakers.. but wonderful sound),

I mostly listen to Music. (all types). What I am looking for is a nice tight bass expansion . Doesnt matter if sub does not go very deep. But whatever it produces has to be tight (no boom effect) .

I would like to know your experience with using pair of REL T3′s.

Thanks
Sameer

Hi Sameer,
I only use my REL subs for home theatre, but I know their ability when it comes to music. Sealed enclosure subs in general have via rhythmic and tight, defined bass. I have demo’ed these subs before for music and they are wonderful. Because they are small, they are not in-yer-face compared to typical big boxes. My advice would be to try and find a retailer to try out the product in-store, or better yet, at home for a few days. I dont think you will be disappointed. Another option is the new SDS range from Sunfire. Similar approach to REL (although they lose the Neutrix connectivity), but fabulous and stunning value for money.
